Avi Silverberg, B.Ed., m.sc. (Kinesiology)

Avi Silverberg started in powerlifting as an athlete, rising through various levels, and ultimately competing in 9 National Championships and 3 World Championships.  Highlights include: achieving a World bronze bench press medal, holding the National Bench Press record in the 120k / 264lb weight class (lifting 300k / 661lbs), competing at the Arnold Sport Festival on four occasions, and ranking 3rd on the all-time Canadian Bench Press Rankings.  

Avi's coaching resume includes coaching over 75 National level powerlifters, as well as numerous local and provincial-level powerlifters.  Most notably, Avi has served as the Team Canada Head Coach on multiple International teams, including:
 
  • 2012 IPF World Bench Press Championships (Czech Republic)
  • 2013 IPF World Sub-Junior/Junior Championships (USA)
  • 2014 IPF World Classic Championships (South Africa)
  • 2015 World Classic Championships (Salo, Finland)
  • 2015 Commonwealth Powerlifting Championships (Vancouver, Canada)
  • 2016 IPF World Classic Championship (USA)
  • 2017 IPF World Classic Championships (Minsk, Belarus)
  • 2018 IPF World Classic Championships (Calgary, Canada)

Avi puts a strong emphasis on the science behind sport performance and has graduated with a Master of Science degree in Kinesiology, with a specific research focus in coaching elite master athletes in powerlifting.   He has contributed to the academic literature in the following areas:  Long term athlete development, coaching models and practices, strength training, powerlifting, and successful aging.  

In addition to founding Pursuit of Strength, Avi has two other powerlifting ventures: 
  • MyStrengthBook:  a web-based platform for powerlifters to build workouts, plan training program and assess training metrics that lead to better performance.  
  • Canadian Powerlifting Podcast:  a bi-weekly show that brings you the best of powerlifting in Canada, discussing trending topics, coaching philosophies, training methods, and much more!

Avi also has a strong commitment to the development of powerlifting and the sport generally. To this end, he is an Executive Member of the Alberta Powerlifting Union, a national-level referee, member of the Canadian Powerlifting Union Student Scholarship Committee and Competition Committee, as well as a Contest Director for many local, provincial, and National powerlifting competitions.
